From classic, upbeat soul to psych-driven, heavy grooves, this double of Santa Cruz local bands will be a complete mind, body and soul experience! Harry and The HitmenHarry and the Hitmen serve up classic Motown and Soul with jovial professionalism. But dont let the suits fool you, the band comes from an improvised rock tradition, and has years of experimentation behind their tight arrangements. Unearthing nuggets from the golden years of Motown and Stax records, the group also writes original New Soul Classics.Because all six members are multi-instrumentalists and avid improvisers, their concerts continue to evolve nightly. Perfectly suited for everything from stately weddings to far-out festivals, Harry and the Hitmen delivers a one-of-a-kind dance party wherever needed!MammatusMammatus has been conjuring up a heavy blend of riff laden, space trippin, proggy, hazy far out rock and roll for ten years now. Since forming in the shadows of the Santa Cruz Mountains of California in 2005, theyve delighted the ears and minds of adventurous listeners around the world. Their wizard and dragon themed self titled debut LP became a cult classic among the stoner rock crowd, drawing rave reviews from music lovers who were mesmerized by the psychedelic jam sandwich of Sabbathy riffage, swirling kraut grooves, and thundering space drones. In 2007 Mammatus released The Coast Explodes, and continued their ascent into heaviness while introducing more prog into the mix and creating a blissful yet intense spiritual rock experience. They traversed North America, garbing themselves in bizarre floral wizard robes and waving redwood staffs foraged from Corralitos Creek, turning people on to their sound and leaving many a sore neck behind them. There was a period of hibernation between 2008 and 2012, spattered with sporadic bursts of energy when Mammatus would appear in select locations on the west coast playing shimmering spaced out hypno prog metal. They had lost themselves in the electronic fury of the mind, writing an album about the elation and confusion that the brain experiences from being overwhelmed by music. They emerged in 2013 with Heady Mental, an album embracing the weird, a hyperpipe of sonic haze. Now Mammatus return with their fourth album, and their most ambitious to date. Sparkling Waters is a double LP featuring four multi-movement pieces, each designed to recalibrate the shanga array in your mind. In order to achieve the highest levels of sensatory clarity, the group enlisted Phil Manley (Trans Am, Life Coach) as their guiding light throughout the studio production. As a result these tracks shimmer with a far out, casual glow, like an aural reflection of a Risan steam pool.
Friday night dance party with the funk and soul masters, ORGŌNE!!ORGŌNEFor nearly twenty years ORGŌNE (a universal life force, pronounced or-gōne) has churned out gritty funk and soul recordings and toured relentlessly across the United States and Europe. Traditionally both the studio and live iterations of the band drew on a tight-knit collective of the West Coasts finest funk and soul musiciansalthough founding members Sergio Rios (guitar/engineer) and Dan Hastie (keyboards) have been constant anchors. However, since late 2013, Rios and Hasite have been joined by Dale Jennings (bass), Sam Halterman (drums), and singer/lyricist Adryon de Len to form a permanent nucleus.

With NorCal funk and soul masters Diggin Dirt and Santa Cruz own funky groove favorites Jive Machine, this is a dance party not to be missed!Diggin DirtThis seven-piece band emerging from behind the redwood curtain in Humboldt County, California, is skyrocketing through the west coast music scene. Shoveling out their own path, and consistently wowing audiences and filling concert venues across the land, Diggin Dirt is no ordinary funk and soul band. Their sounds explode off the stage with as much authentic energy as one can handle, and once they have you in their clutches, the relentless dance party does not let up. Their intoxicating and infectious sound is fueled by a blazing horn section, pulsating rhythms, and searing guitars, that when combined into one, have been known to entice even the shyest of wallflowers to start movin and groovin. Behold, as they layer humble influences of psychedelic rock, Motown soul, Afrobeat, and even reggae, atop a sturdy foundation of down and dirty, greasy and grimy, late 60s inspired funk music. You might have flashes of James Brown or Sly and the Family Stone, Otis Redding or Tower of Power, but make no mistake that you are in the presence of spine-tingling originality. Leading the charge and tying it all together is frontman extraordinaire Zach Alder, a performer like no other; hes in possession of the pipes, charisma, moves, and natural-born-soul, to launch this ensemble into rarefied air.Jive MachineJive Machine habitually bends the rules, blurs the lines, and stretches musical boundaries. Their music takes listeners on a sonic rollercoaster that fuses elements of old-school funk, progressive rock, blues, and soul. Throughout their set, you can hear diverse influences such as Tower Of Power, Jimi Hendrix and Trombone Shorty. Jive Machine is uniquely able to incorporate new ideas while paying homage to the great artists who came before them. The band is defined by a strong rhythmic foundation, infectious melodies, tasteful lead guitar virtuosity, and crisp horn lines. Recently, Jive Machine has become notorious for their pop-up performances in downtown Santa Cruz. With a timeless sound that blends heavy soul and psych-rock, Monophonics have built a reputation over the past decade as one of the best live bands in the country. Led by singer Kelly Finnigan, the band of has drawn on their colorful history both their experiences as veteran touring performers and as individuals growing up in the Bay Area to create Its Only Us, their fourth release since 2012, out March 13th on Colemine Records.A reflection of what they see as the current state of the world, the record touches on difficult subjects such as broken relationships, mental health issues, gun violence and power struggles, all with an underlying message of unity, resilience and acceptance. The bands signature style of arrangement leaning on warm textures, thanks to rhythm and horn sections whose reputations precede them has been expanded with top-notch production and creative instrumentation: a Mellotron, lap steel guitar, harp and Moog all round out the Monophonics trademark soul sound, while Finnigans vocals are more powerful than ever. At times these tracks can feel classic, as familiar as an old song you grew up with, while simultaneously raising questions about the state of music in 2020 and what the future might hold. Its Only Us is the sound of a group continuing to grow as songwriters, musicians, performers and people reflecting on where theyve been, and pushing the boundaries of whats possible in the years to come.
