However, this endeavor makes the common inquiry as to what kind of music they play a loaded question. Its folky but not folk music, bluesy but not blues music, soulful but not soul. As a solo performer, the same collection of songs (his originals, and a handful of renditions) becomes more straightforward: he plays folk and blues music…its soulful but not soul. Some of the influences become more obvious at a solo performance. You can hear a musician that has worshipped Leo Keottke, Mississippi John Hurt, Tom Waits and countless others, and who has hoped to learn something valuable from each of them.
